Over the years, we‘ve supported Columbus House in many ways. Their mission is to serve people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, by providing shelter and housing, and by fostering their personal growth and independence.
We have made donations in the past in support their programs for veterans, and for clients in the main shelter. Last month, we made donations of healthy snacks to help support their Outreach programs.
Columbus House uses healthy snacks for their Outreach and Engagement team, to pass out to folks who aren’t coming into the shelter on their own. A team, specially-trained to work with such people and help guide them into the shelter for safety reasons, seeks out people who are homeless, on the streets, living in encampments, etc. They’re encouraged to at least come into the Outreach and Engagement office to meet with case managers, take a shower, and work with employment and housing specialists, etc., although they are still provided services and counseling even if they don’t decide to come into the shelter.
The Outreach teams give out gift cards to Dunkin Donuts, as well as healthy snacks, toiletries, socks and underwear, and other items, as well.
Watson donated over 500 healthy snacks for the Columbus House outreach programs this December. We are planning to do another food drive for healthy snacks in the spring.
