Homeless for the Holidays

As it gets colder in the northeast I think we can all reflect on how blessed we are to have a warm home to protect us from the elements. The holidays are especially centered around family and home. We decorate our homes and we invite family and friends over to celebrate.

The harsh reality is not everyone has a home to go to. Homelessness has many causes. There is a wonderful group of people in New Haven who are dedicated to ending homelessness.

Columbus House opened its doors in 1982 to provide services for men and women. Their goals quickly broadened from providing basic necessities like food and shelter to understanding and working toward overcoming the problems which cause people to become homeless.

Columbus House, along with its core of loyal supporters, friends, and volunteers, has remained committed to fulfilling its mission: “To serve people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, by providing shelter and housing and by fostering their personal growth and independence.”

In order to accomplish our mission, Columbus House relies on contributions from the private sector including businesses, foundations, and individuals.

For the fourth year in a row, the elves at Watson got together to bring peace and joy to the residents and clients of Columbus House. The sprites here realize that not everyone’s Christmas is always Merry and Bright and in an effort to spread good Holiday Cheer Watson gifted much-needed items for holiday gift bags.

In total, we donated enough supplies for 260-holiday gift bags. Enough for each person in the Columbus House shelter to receive a gift at Christmas. Each bag contains:

  • A warm and cozy fleece jacket or sweater
  • A new T-Shirt
  • Three pairs of underwear
  • Socks
  • Toothpaste and a tooth brush
  • Lip balm
  • Hand lotion
  • Assorted bath and body washes and antibacterial hand soaps

These are really such basic items. But what is most important is that each recipient will know that someone was thinking of them, someone cares and they have not been forgotten. This is especially important during the holidays. Isolation and distance family and friends is always difficult, but it is even harder during the holiday. It is so important that people facing challenges know that they are not alone and that there are people who are concerned for them. This can make all the difference in the world.

Also, we believe that beyond the basic needs a little fun needs to go into each Christmas bag. So each bag will also have something fun added in.

  • Magnetic travel games (cheese, checkers, snakes and Ladders and more favorites)
  • Playing cards

We wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas from every one of us at Watson!

Columbus house is at its core an exceptional team of people that works together every day toward shared goals of one-day ending homelessness as we know it. Columbus House can always use more good spirit go here and see how you can be a good elf too!
