Watson Donated Pancake Mix is a Good Source of 10 Vitamins and Minerals
West Haven CT – Watson Inc. is proud to announce a second donation of 4,000 pounds of buttermilk pancake mix to the Connecticut Food Bank. “This pancake mix is special,” said Moira Watson, Vice President of Marketing and Communication at Watson, “not only because it is made especially for the Food Bank but because this time we have added ten vitamins and minerals to the mix. In past years the pancake mix has been traditional mix without added vitamins and minerals. This past July I spoke to Luther Turmelle of the New Haven Register. He was aware of Watson’s background in nutritional products and asked why we did not make the pancake mix healthier. I thought that was a great idea.”
The pancake mix Watson manufactured for the Connecticut Food Bank was fortified with vitamins and minerals in a similar manner to what is done regularly with breakfast cereals in the United Sates. Each pancake serving will provide 15% of the Daily Value (DV) (the recommended daily intake amount for that vitamin or mineral) of Calcium, Iron, Vitamin D3, Folic Acid, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, and Zinc.
Why add vitamins and minerals? “Ultimately, the experts at Watson know that a healthy lifestyle begins with eating a diet that’s adequate in vitamins and minerals,” responded Johnpaul Tata, Regulatory Affairs Specialist at Watson. “For example, water soluble micro-nutrients such as the B vitamins, folic acid and vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12, are essential for normal and healthy tissue growth, energy metabolism, and the formation of red blood cells. Additionally, vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) supports the maintenance of the central nervous system,” continued Tata.
He added, “Minerals are also essential for maintaining a healthy diet and work in correlation with vitamins to perform numerous roles within the body. Zinc is vital to stay healthy and is necessary for a strong immune system, cellular growth, wound healing and also contributes to functions in neurological activity. Iron, in conjunction with vitamin B12, maintains healthful red blood cells and their oxygen-carrying capacity. Other minerals such as calcium, is vital at every stage of life and works together with vitamin D3 (also known as cholecalciferol) to build strong bones. In fact, the body requires vitamin D to absorb calcium to help strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis.”

The pancake mix is donated to the Connecticut Food Bank in 50 pound bags. It is then distributed to a network of soup kitchens in six of the state’s eight counties: Fairfield, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, New London, and Windham.
The pancake mix is formulated to be a complete mix and only water is added to produce the batter. Each pound of mix will yield 15 servings. Therefore the 4,000 pounds of mix being donated this month should provide approximately 60,000 servings of pancakes. Each serving will be a good source of 10 vitamins and minerals.
